Our teeth age as we do and over time they become more susceptible to decay, cracking, discoloration and more. If filling or bonding isn’t enough to repair damaged teeth, crowns are a great way to recover your smile. Crowns will support the existing tooth and ensure no other problems can develop. Dr. Pike can help you decide whether crowns are an appropriate option for restoring your smile. Once the decision to place crowns has been made the whole process will be completed in two visits to the Deerfield Family Dentistry office.
Crowns are made from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or gold. A porcelain finished crown can be matched to the shade of your other teeth and offers the most natural feel and look. At your first visit, the tooth receiving the crown will be filed down so that the crown can be placed over it. You will be given a local anesthetic before this part of the procedure so you will not experience any discomfort. Once the tooth has been reshaped, a mold will be taken of that tooth and the surrounding teeth. The mold will be used to create your custom crown. Before leaving, Dr. Pike will fit you with a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready.
Once your unique crown arrives (2-3 weeks) you’ll visit the office again to have the permanent crown cemented in place. Crowns are durable and will keep your smile sparkling for 10-15 years. Crowns should be cared for as if they were any of your natural teeth, with regular brushing and flossing. Treat your teeth like royalty, with crown restoration at Deerfield Family Dentistry.
